Ash Wednesday Action: Stop the Desecration and Open Washington Square Park

On February 6, 2007, a community event was held at Judson church, a progressive Presbyterian church located directly across the street from the south side of the park. The event, publicized as "Ash Wednesday Action: Stop the Desecration and Open Washington Square Park!", was sponsored by Judson church and Open Washington Square Park Coalition and included a speech of condolence by the church senior minister Donna Schaper, musical performances, and a call to Mayor Bloomberg and the Parks Department Commissioner Benelope to repair, not redesign, the park. A videotape of the call was planned to be sent to Mayor Bloomberg. Afterwards, the attendants went outside and marched to the arch, carrying candles and flowers. The event was attended by more than 100 people.
